Health Snacks and School Celebrations

We're all well aware of the boundless joy that celebrations like birthdays bring to our students. Often, these occasions have featured indulgent treats such as cupcakes, cookies, candies, chips, and sugary beverages like punch. To ensure that each classroom experience takes a healthy route for all students, we've taken the step to discontinue the inclusion of such items in school-related activities.

We want to make sure that our students' celebrations and whole-class snacking experiences align with the nutritional criteria championed by the USDA. These standards underscore the importance of incorporating whole grains, fresh produce, lean proteins, and foods low in fat, sugar, and sodium, thereby nurturing a culture of well-balanced and healthful snacking.

Should you plan on contributing food items for your child's classroom, we kindly ask for your collaboration in adhering to these standards. If you have any queries about why specific items are encouraged or if you'd like to explore alternative child nutrition options, our dedicated Child Nutrition Office is readily available to assist. Additionally, your child's teacher can provide insights into classroom-specific celebration practices, ensuring that every student's experience is thoughtful and enjoyable.

Personal Device (cell phones, etc) & School Device Expectations at Westford School

Setting our students up for success means creating a boundary and limiting access to their personal devices during school. Our practices continue to evolve to meet the needs of our students and this year we will collect devices at the beginning of the day instead of asking students to keep them in their lockers. Devices such as cell phones will be locked up for students and they will be able to get them at dismissal. You can find information concerning the research behind this practice as well as detailed expectations and procedures about personal devices here.
