As we progress through this school year, I would like to acknowledge and celebrate the academic and emotional growth we see in our students. We appreciate your support and you can trust that we will continue to make adjustments to our teaching that reflect the next best steps for learning. We are fortunate to have a team of educators in every classroom K-8 to support the differentiation of curriculum and to prioritize instruction on specific learning targets connected to EWSD essential standards. In our system of support, students may receive additional time and practice, supplemental instruction, and intensive interventions by classroom teachers, learning specialists, interventionists, an instructional coach, and instructional assistants.
As we monitor student progress on our essential academic, social, and emotional standards, we adjust our instruction including any supplemental instructional groupings. This means we flexibly move students in and out of small groups based on the information teachers collect to design what each student needs during the core academic blocks and the WIN block (What I Need Block) regularly in all classrooms. This structure and practice is considered a Tier I and Tier II intervention to ensure students get what they need to meet grade-level standards. We also provide Tier III support, which focuses on a previous year's grade level standard that is necessary for students to access the current year's learning.
In January, we will again provide standardized assessments and will use this to inform our core instruction and supplemental instruction. Students who require support on essential standards from a previous school year (Tier III) will receive that support, and we will work with parents to write individual plans such as Educational Support Plans as needed. Students whose progress shows a need for additional time, practice, and/or support on a current grade level essential standard (Tier I or Tier II) will continue to benefit from our system. It is expected that all students at some time will need Tier I and II support, which is why the WIN block was created. I'm excited that we continue to utilize our school-wide schedule and resources to offer such support and will also begin supplemental instruction in our social and emotional standards.
We look forward to another fantastic semester with our students. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out.
