We are excited to announce our decision to offer sports teams for 7th and 8th grade students in soccer and basketball, along with a co-ed volleyball team for 5th through 8th grade. This decision was made after carefully considering several important factors:
Student Interest: Teams require a sufficient number of players within the 7th and 8th grades to form competitive groups.
Westford Recreation Department Offerings: The Recreation Department will offer soccer and basketball programs for 5th and 6th grade students, providing developmentally appropriate opportunities for younger athletes.
Developmental Differences: We recognize that 5th-8th grade students are at varying stages of physical development, and separating programs allows us to better address the needs of each age group.
Co-op Opportunities: For students interested in sports not offered at Westford School, such as cross country or track, our Athletic Director, Rich Staab, will work with families to coordinate co-op agreements with Essex Middle School (EMS). Sixth-grade students may also have opportunities to participate in EMS sports programs if available.
Additional Options: If EMS offerings are not feasible, there may be opportunities at ADL Middle School, although the longer commute might pose challenges for some families. While the school cannot provide transportation to practices or games, families have previously coordinated carpooling. Timing typically works as EMS dismisses later than Westford.
We have adjusted our process to make sports decisions based on consistent factors, ensuring better planning and clarity for families, the school, and the Recreation Department.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support of Westford School athletics.
