At the end of an experience/internship/job shadow:

  1. Thank your mentor/supervisor for the opportunity, the time and the overall experience.

  2. Mention what you learned.

  3. If possible, share a personal story or any key takeaways.

  4. Share what you next steps are/future plans.

  5. Thank them one more time.

Example:

Dear Mr. Smith,

Thank you for providing me with a wonderful internship at ABC Company.  During my internship I learned a lot about what is required of an elementary teacher.  The biggest takeaway was when you had me work with a group of students who were having difficulty learning the multiplication table and I needed to work with each student individually.  I really enjoyed working with the students and seeing them finally understanding this concept.  At that moment, I realized teaching is for me.

Next year I plan to go to the University of Vermont majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in math.  Once again, thank you for spending the time with me so I could experience what teaching is really like.

Sincerely, (add your name)

Think about this:

What if you are the only one who sends a thank you note?  What if you are the only one who does not?
