Vermont Department of Motor Vehicle Check

*Please note that the process outlined below is in addition to any required background check/screening (find more information for staff, contractors or volunteers).*

Operating a District-Owned Vehicle and/or Transporting Students in a District-Owned Vehicle
Any EWSD employee or contractor who will be operating a district-owned vehicle and/or transporting students in one must submit for prior approval. Approval will be contingent upon satisfactory results of a Department of Vermont Motor Vehicles check, paid for by the district.

Transporting Students in a Personal Vehicle
Any EWSD employee, volunteer or contractor who will be transporting students in their personal vehicle must submit for prior approval. Approval will be contingent upon satisfactory results of a Department of Vermont Motor Vehicles check, paid for by the district.

Please note that this process is intended for use for activities that occur within the student day and/or for extra-curricular activities (e.g., field trips, job fair/job shadow or sports game where a coach or staff member is transporting the student(s)), and should only be used as a last resort if no other transportation is available (e.g., school bus or district minivan).  This should not be used to transport students to/from the regular school day of instruction.  If a community member will be transporting students on district business, they are considered a volunteer and must also complete that process as outlined.

Employees Operating Personal Vehicles on EWSD Business
Any EWSD employee who operates their personal vehicle on EWSD business should review and follow the EWSD District Safety Procedure: Operation of District Vehicles & Personal Vehicles for Approved EWSD Business (excludes School Buses).

Operating a School Bus - Drug Testing
For any position where driving a school bus is a condition of employment, the prospective employee shall be required to undergo a drug screening after a conditional offer of employment has been made. All offers of employment shall be conditioned upon acceptable results of the screening. Consistent with federal law, individuals who drive a school bus shall also be subject to random drug testing throughout an individual's employment with the district.

Periodic (Annual) DMV Checks
The district will conduct DMV checks on a periodic basis (but not less than once per year) at the discretion of the supervisor. Paperwork does not need to be resubmitted.

Training for Drivers
EWSD employees have access to additional driving training courses through our Vector Solutions system (note that these may be mandatory for some employees, depending on the position requirements). To view suggested courses, go to the My Assignments page and scroll down to the bottom under "Interested in Extra Training?" and click on the "View Library" button. At the top right, search for: Defensive Driving; Distracted Driving; City Driving; and/or Winter Driving.
